BSO Music Criticism Contest
Greetings from the Boston Symphony Orchestra! The great German composer Robert Schumann, the bicentennial of whose birth we celebrate this season, was a fine writer and insightful critic about the music of his peers. His essays elevated the reputations of many, including Schubert (posthumously), his contemporary Chopin ("Hats off, gentlemen: a genius!"), and his younger colleague Brahms (at the very start of his career). To accompany the Boston Symphony Orchestra's three-week concentration on Schumann's orchestral music-including performances of all four symphonies and his Piano Concerto-the BSO institutes a Music Criticism Contest, open to all ages, with the winners in five age categories. The essay should be a personal response to one of the five Schumann pieces being performed at Symphony Hall in November. Please visit www.bso.org/criticismcontest for more details or to submit your entry.

Folk Art Tours are available free-of-charge to Boston Public Schools and to other groups for a fee. Contact IHOBF-Boston to schedule a tour at 617.960.8380 or ihobfboston@livenation.com. Aitan Grossman, a California 6th grader, wrote an international global warming
