Announcing 2012 BPS Arts Expansion Fund Guidelines!

Arts Expansion Fund – Year 4 Guidelines Released
Applications due March 28, 2012

The BPS Arts Expansion Fund is supported by collaborating donors including the Barr Foundation, The Boston Foundation, Hunt Alternatives Fund, Klarman Family Foundation, Linde Family Foundation and other foundations and individual donors. The Fund is administered by EdVestors on behalf of its donors. This school year over $800,000 in grants are helping to expand arts instruction to 8,000 students in 50 schools.

Microsoft Word versions of the guidelines for the Arts Expansion Fund and results from this year’s BPS Arts Inventory will be available for download by Wednesday of next week. A PDF version of the 2012 GUIDELINES is accessible so you can begin thinking about your application.

In its fourth year of grantmaking, the Arts Expansion Fund continues to evolve to advance the goals of the Arts Expansion Initiative. In response to the evolving landscape, this year the Fund will seek to support programs that expand, sustain, and deepen arts learning opportunities for BPS students. The Fund will continue to prioritize grants that contribute to increasing the number of students receiving arts instruction in schools that are not yet at the goal of 100%. For returning grantees, the Fund will consider supporting arts expansion programs that build in strategies that increase the sustainability of the effort. Lastly, for schools who are meeting the benchmark of reaching 100% of students with arts instruction, proposals to deepen the arts opportunities for their students through culturally relevant offerings and additional disciplines will be considered.

An information session for this year’s Arts Expansion Fund grant programs will be held Wednesday, March 7, 2012 from 3:30 to 5:30pm at EdVestors, 140 Clarendon Street, 2nd floor in the Kuumba Library. Garage and limited on-street metered parking is available. Accessible by the Orange Line, Back Bay stop or the Copley stop on the Green Line.

Boston Receives 4 Million Dollar Grant to Expand Arts Education in Boston Public Schools!

Boston Receives 4 Million Dollar Grant to Expand Arts Education in Boston Public Schools!

The Wallace Foundation, working with EdVestors, has announced a $4 million commitment to greatly expand arts instruction in BPS. The grant will build capacity to expand and sustain high-quality arts education for all BPS students through new approaches to arts instruction, curriculum, professional development, partnership coordination, and student and family engagement.

The private philanthropic dollars add to increased public funding for additional classroom arts teachers, as part of Dr. Johnson’s coordinated effort to expand arts education across the school system. Since 2009, the annual amount spent on arts instruction by BPS has increased by $2 million annually.

Today, nine out of 10 elementary and middle school students in Boston are receiving weekly arts education, up from 67% three years ago. The number of high school students accessing arts education has doubled over the past three school years. The Initiative has set a goal of reaching 100% of students in grades PreK-8 with weekly year-long arts instruction, while dramatically expanding high school arts learning opportunities.
